What Is a Varifocal Lens?

OVP 5-100mm Varifocal Zoom CCTV Camera Manual Iris Lens AN05100V

In Animal Vision

  • The lenses in humans' and other animals' eyes flex to shift sharp focus between distances. Bi- and trifocal corrective lenses are properly multifocal, rather than varifocal, meaning the viewer, rather than the lens, does the shifting. Early in 2010, however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first "accommodating" lens for implantation after cataract surgery, flexed by eye muscles like a natural varifocal lens

In Photography

  • The optical zoom lens on almost every digital camera is varifocal, though it's actually a system of lenses that changes the distance between its components. The long zoom lens that snaps onto an SLR (single-lens reflex) camera, digital or not, is the classic form

In Surveillance Cameras

  • Variable focus in a single lens came to security cameras in the 21st century, but is usually set manually: When you set up your surveillance system, you can choose where in its field of view you want each camera to focus. The camera doesn't zoom in on suspicious activity, and you can't refocus recorded video to read a license plate

How to Zoom the Lens When Taking a Photograph?

OVP 5-100mm Varifocal Zoom CCTV Camera Manual Iris Lens AN05100V

  • One of the most important camera fundamentals is learning how to zoom the lens. Although this skill is intuitive for many, you will never be able to take good photos without mastering your camera's zoom feature. Learn more about zooming to get the most out of your camera and to ensure that you never miss a good photo opportunity
  • Turn the camera on. Remove the lens cap so you will be ready to take a photo after zooming the lens. Point the camera toward the subject
  • Turn the lens zoom ring to adjust the focal length on SLR and digital SLR cameras. Most lenses zoom in by turning the ring to the right. Turn it to the left to zoom out. Some lenses, however, work in the opposite way. Look through the view finder to determine the effects of turning the zoom ring on your particular lens
  • Press the right or left zoom button or turn the zoom dial if you are using a point-and-shoot camera. These models do not have interchangeable lenses. The zoom controls on these cameras are usually located near the upper right-hand corner of the device
  • Press the right zoom button to increase the zoom. It generally has a "+" label. Use the "-" button on the left to zoom out. If your camera has a zoom dial, move it to the right to zoom in and turn it left to zoom out
  • Zoom the lens appropriately. Consider what effect zooming in will have on the photo. For landscape shots, it is generally not a good idea to zoom in very far. When shooting a portrait, however, you should zoom in close to the subject. Sometimes you just need to zoom a little to remove an extraneous object from the shot
  • Many photographers are cautious about zooming too far because although computer software can crop out unwanted parts of a photo, it is impossible to recover scenery that was never part of the picture to begin with

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure nothing is blocking the lens when zooming. Forcing the lens to zoom in the presence of an obstruction could damage the camera
