How to Replace a G4 Mirror Door Power Supply:

The power supply on your Power Mac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors (MDD) may need replacement if it was damaged during a power surge or if it is simply faulty. The power supplies used on these models are a unique size and, on select models, they were prone to failure. In fact, Apple instituted a power supply replacement program to appease G4 customers who had problems with power supplies on their G4 machines.


  • Instructions
  • Turn off the computer by clicking the "Apple" menu and choosing "Shut Down."
  • Unplug all cables other than the power cord from the comptuer.
  • Touch one of the metal PCI slot covers on the back of the Power Mac G4 to discharge static electricity. After touching the cover, you can unplug the power cord.
  • Lift the latch on the right side of the computer to unlock and lower the access panel.
  • Lower the right side panel until it rests flat on your desk or table. Apple recommends lowering the panel onto a soft cloth to prevent scratching of the G4 MDD case.
  • Disconnect the hard drives in the frontmost hard drive carrier, if they are installed. Disconnect the data cables from the drives and press down on the lever to the right of the drive bays. Slide the carrier out of the G4 tower.
  • Remove the screw in the back of the rear drive carrier using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the lever on the side of the drive carrier forward and move the carrier upward to pull it forward enough to disconnect the hard drive data and power cables from the drive. Depending on the size of your hands, you may need to use pliers to disconnect the cables from the back of the hard drives.
  • Remove the back panel from the CD/DVD drive carrier by sliding it away from the computer case.
  • Remove the screws in the upper-left and lower-right corners of the optical drive carrier using your Phillips screwdriver. Slide the carrier so you can disconnect the data and power cables attached to the optical drive. Remove the carrier from the G4 MDD.
  • Disconnect the ATA cable from the logic board and next disconnect the second ATA cable that was covered by the first one. The fan connector is located underneath the second ATA cable.
  • Lift the locking tab on the fan cable using a small flat-tip screwdriver as you disconnect it from the logic board.
  • Remove the fan by sliding it straight up out of its mounting on the same shelf as the optical drive.
  • Disconnect the power supply cable by pinching the locking tab on the top-center edge of the cable. The power supply connector is larger than other connectors and, as such, Apple notes it may require some force to disconnect and remove.
  • Thread the power cable and connector through the the bottom of the G4 MDD chassis to release it. Continue routing the cables through the optical drive shelf, near where you removed the fan. Route the power cables to the outside of the case via the opening at the back of the optical drive shelf.
  • Loosen and remove the screw on the back panel using a 2.5-mm Allen key.
  • Remove the Phillips screw on the side of the case at the front of the power supply, roughly parallel with the optical drive door.
  • Press in on the power supply while sliding it toward the front panel and out of the computer. Remove the power supply and the cable loom from the computer. As this step requires some force, be sure to support the opposite side of the computer while removing the power supply.
  • Align the tabs on the replacement power supply with the notches on the G4 MDD chassis. Slide the new power supply into place, ensuring that the screw holes on the back of the computer and side of the power supply are properly aligned.
  • Reinstall the screws in the back of the case and side panel to secure the power supply.
  • Route the hard drive cables through the optical drive opening and set them over the logic board, but do not plug them in.
  • Install the replacement fan in the computer by aligning it with the latches in the drive shelf. Push the fan straight down to lock the fan in place. Route the fan cable through the optical drive shelf and connect the cable to the logic board.
  • Reinstall the optical drive carrier and connect the data and power cables back to the optical drive. Once secure, reinstall the optical drive carrier screws.
  • Reinstall the front hard drive carrier by aligning the center peg on the carrier with the channel on the bottom of the optical drive shelf. Slide the bay in until the right lever clicks into place.
  • Connect the power cables to the hard drives by pushing them in until they click.
  • Reconnect the hard drive cables and reinstall the back bay hard drive carrier. Next, rotate the carrier upward so it is aligned with the notches in the G4 MDD chassis. Push the carrier down until the left side lever clicks into place. Raise the side access panel until it snaps into place to complete the installation.
