How to Put a PCMCIA Card Into an Express Card Slot:

ExpressCard and a PCMCIA card on a laptop work in similar ways. Both provide expansion of components for the laptop such as wireless cards or other interfaces. The ExpressCard, however, is not as wide as the PCMCIA card, and thus inserting a PCMCIA card into an ExpressCard slot is not possible unless you use an adapter

  • Insert the PCMCIA to ExpressCard adapter into the ExpressCard slot on the side of the laptop
  • Follow the prompts onscreen to install the driver. The hardware driver installation screen automatically pops up when the adapter is inserted
  • Insert the PCMCIA card into the adapter

How to Use a Laptop Express Card:

  • Most Microsoft Windows based laptops will have express card slots built in. Those slots allow for hardware to be easily added to the laptop, such as TV tuner cards, sound cards, or wireless server cards. Whatever the hardware, the installation steps are similar
  • Purchase hardware you would like to use with the laptop express card slot, but make sure it is compatible with the particular laptop. Some laptop brands use different sized slots. The user manual for the laptop will explain what size can be used
  • Insert the hardware into the express card slot. You will hear a "click" and a light on the side of the hardware will flash on. That will signal that the device is connected to the computer. In a moment your computer will notify you: "New hardware being detected."
  • Insert the hardware installation disk into the computer and install the software and the driver for the device. Follow the prompts to complete the setup. Depending on the device you may be asked to restart the computer
  • Open the software associated with the device (if their is any) by double-clicking either the desktop icon or by going through the "Start" button
  • For example, if you are using a wireless Internet adapter, you will need to go to "Start," "Control Panel" and "Network Settings." That will open the information related to the wireless Internet. Select the hardware as the device you'll use to connect to the Internet and click "Apply." You will now be able to connect to the Internet
