RCA Connector:

  • An RCA connector, sometimes called a phono connector or cinch connector, is a type of electrical connector commonly used to carry audio and video signals. The name "RCA" derives from the Radio Corporation of America, which introduced the design by the early 1940s to allow mono phonograph players to be connected to amplifiers.
  • They began to replace the older TRS connectors (also called jack plugs) for many other applications in the audio world when component high fidelity systems started becoming popular in the 1950s. However, mini TRS connectors (3.5 mm jacks) and sub-miniature (2.5 mm) jacks have been overtaking RCA connectors in some recent applications such as MP3 players.
  • The connection's plug is called an RCA plug or phono plug, for "phonograph". The name "phono plug" is sometimes confused with a "phone plug" which refers to anything from a TRS connector plug to a British phone plug to an RJ14 registered jack plug

How to Convert Audio Out From a RCA Jack to 3.5mm?

Anpu 3.5mm Stereo Plug Male to 2 RCA Female Converter Adapter

Converting an audio signal from an RCA jack to 3.55mm requires an adapter available at electronics stores. Adapting an RCA jack to 3.5mm, which is also referred to as a mini-plug, may be desirable for using an older audio component with newer equipment such as headphones that commonly use the smaller jack size. Computer sound cards and headphone jacks also use mini-plugs, so it is necessary to use a mini-plug adapter for these devices when connecting with components such as tape decks and turntables.

  • Check the back of the audio component to determine whether there are stereo RCA jacks or a single mono jack. This determines which type of adapter to use.
  • Insert the plugs (or plug) on one end of the RCA cables into the Audio OUT jacks on a component, using the red plug for the right stereo channel and the white plug for the left.
  • Connect the plugs on the other end of the RCA cables to the jacks in the Y-adapter with a 3.5 mm mini-plug on the other end, or insert a single RCA mono plug into a metal adapter with an RCA jack on one end and a 3.5mm plug on the other.

Stereo RCA Y Adapter Options

RCA Y adapters connect the audio output from the left and right channels of a device to a single input. They are useful in transmitting audio from a device that only uses one kind of output--such as an audio receiver--to a device that only accepts one kind of input--a computer's sound card.

  • RCA Female to Stereo Male 1/8 Inch
  • This adapter provides a connection between the stereo output on an audio device--like a tape deck or audio receiver--into a single stereo input. This is a good choice for sending audio from a device to a computer for recording.
  • RCA Female to Stereo Male 1/4 Inch
  • This connects a left and right channel audio output from an audio device to a single input. It uses a 1/4 inch jack for the male end, which is more common in professional mixers or audio interfaces.
  • RCA Male to RCA Male
  • This connects a single female RCA cable into jacks that can connect to two male RCA outputs. It allows devices that only have single RCA inputs or outputs to connect to a device that has a multi-channel input.
  • 1/4 Inch Female to RCA Male
  • This accepts inputs from a 1/4 inch jack and adapts it to an RCA capable device. It is useful for some older mixers that only accept RCA jacks to connect to a guitar or microphone.

How to Install RCA Jack Adapters?

RCA jack adapters are used to connect video or audio cables to components with different types of jacks. RCA jacks were introduced by the Radio Corporation of America for use with phonograph record players in the 1940s. These plugs are commonly found on speaker cables and triple cord connectors for a VCR or DVD player. The jacks are still widely used on cables for modern equipment, yet, now other types of connector plugs are found on some audio and video devices. Adapters are available to convert RCA connectors to F-type, 1/4 inch, mini jacks and BNC connectors.

  • Use an adapter to convert an RCA jack from a male plug to a female receiver. Many cables with RCA jacks have male plugs on both sides. Plug the male end from a cable into an adapter sleeve with female end connectors on both sides. The cable can then receive an RCA male end through the other side of the adapter.
  • Connect an RCA jack to a mini jack, 1/4 inch, F-type or BNC adapter. Plug the RCA jack into its receiver on the adapter. The other end of the adapter forms a plug for the desired type of connection. Adapters are made to connect all combinations of male and female ends between two plug types.
  • Plug two RCA jacks into a single mini jack or 1/4-inch port. Stereo signals for left- and right-channel sound are often carried on two audio cables with RCA jacks. Adapters are made to receive both RCA jacks on one side with a 1/4-inch or mini jack plug on the other.
  • Connect the RCA jacks from a DVD player to a television with an F-type receiving port. Plug the yellow, red and white RCA jacks into the color-coded receiving ports on a signal converter adapter. Connect one end of an F-type plug into the audio/video output on the adapter and the other end into the television.
