What Cables Do I Need for HDTV?

  • High definition television (HDTV) is becoming a standard now that TVs are more affordable and more stations and networks are broadcasting in HD
  • But, to take advantage of the high resolution video, the correct cable connections must be used

High Definition:

  • HD differs from standard definition (SD) video by delivering a more vibrant and detailed picture consisting of 1920x1080 lines of resolution, compared to 640x480 for SD
  • HD has a higher ratio of frames-per-second and the more rectangular, expanded 16:9 aspect ratio

Inputs:

  • HDTV sets have varying numbers and types of input/output connections, located on the back of the unit and sometimes the side and/or front as well
  • These will include any combination of HDMI, component video/audio, S-Video, composite RCA inputs and coaxial cable. Of those, HDMI and component video are the only cables that can facilitate HD video

HDMI:

  • HDMI input (left)HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) provides high quality digital audio and video in a single cable
  • The connection points at each end of the cable are thin and rectangular, and slightly smaller at the bottom, so that the cable must be lined up exactly with the port for a proper connection.Component Video

Component Video:

  • Component video cables have five separate prongs at each end: Three (red, blue and green) for video and two (red and white) for audio
  • The component input(s) of the TV will have plugs that match each of those colors so the right cable can go into the correct plug

Connecting each type of cable is a simple process:

  • Plug one end of the cables into the input of the TV, and the other to the output of the component (cable tellite receiver, DVD player, etc.)
  • Then press the corresponding input button on the TV remote to view that component

Package Included:

  • 1 x VGA to 5 BNC Cable
