Technological advances in LEDs (light emitting diodes) has taken them from simple red indicator lights to energy-efficient replacements for standard incandescent bulbs

LED Benefits

  • With the big push for "green energy," LED light bulbs are a new major player. A standard 50-watt incandescent bulb produces about 300 lumens of light, but an equivalent LED bulb consumes only about 7.5 watts to produce the same lumens. This power usage is even less than compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which are popular replacements for standard bulbs. LED bulbs are now available with an "Edison base" E-26 size, which work in all common household lamps and light fixtures. LED bulbs do not contain mercury, as do CFLs, making them more environmentally friendly. Compared to incandescent lights, LED bulbs are more energy efficient, don't give off high amounts of wasted heat, are more shock resistant and rugged, are less hazardous (no glass envelope to break), and they have an incredibly long life expectancy

Applications Of LEDs

  • The first LEDs to be developed were simple, small red lights used as indicators on various test equipment and appliances, applications that are still in use today. Red LEDs began to appear in electronic products as seven-segment digital displays for TVs, radios, calculators, telephones and watches. But, these did not produce enough light to illuminate an area. Now, these solid state devices are capable of replacing traditional household lighting, both indoors and outdoors. LEDs are being used in automotive lighting, too. Drop-in replacement LED bulbs are even available for some fluorescent light tube fixtures, with an expected 10-year life span

Life Expectancies

  • One of the many benefits of LED lights is their long life. Many LEDs put in service in the 1970s are still operating today. Their expected life span is estimated between 25,000 and 100,000 hours. The newer LED light bulbs, designed to replace standard household incandescent bulbs, have a life span of about 30,000 hours. Compare that to an estimated 7,500 hours for a compact fluorescent bulb and a mere 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb. Though the initial cost of an LED bulb is currently much more expensive than that of other types of lights, their reduced cost to operate and their elimination of the need to buy more than one bulb for many years makes them a more attractive investment

Shortening Life Expectancy

  • LEDs are solid state semiconductor devices, as are transistors and integrated circuits. Occasionally, these devices can suddenly fail, long before their normal life expectancy. But this is a rare occurrence. As is true of all semiconductors, their enemies are heat and excess current flow. When operated in their designed temperature and current range, they should have many years of service. The environment in which they are operated is important to their longevity. LED light bulbs will flicker, dim or not work at all at extreme cold and hot temperatures. One manufacturer's specifications lists those extreme temperatures as -14 degrees Fahrenheit and +122 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to these temperatures, however, will not damage the bulb, and when brought back within the designated operating temperatures will run normally


  • New on the horizon are "organic light emitting diodes," which create light on an ultra-thin sheet of material rather than a pinpoint of light. Though currently extremely expensive, they will able to light entire walls. One designer envisions putting them in ceiling tiles or in Venetian blinds so that a room can appear to be sunlit in the evening. Like their "inorganic" LED cousins, OLEDs expect to have a healthy 20-year life expectancy
