How to Wire a Wall Plate?

Wall plates provide easy access to all sorts of wiring, from Ethernet to XLR cable, and can prove useful for applications such as home audio and Internet access. But wall plates aren't always placed conveniently for our needs. Knowing how to wire a wall plate properly can save time, headaches and costly repair fees while giving you the convenience of deciding which placement works best for you.

Installing the Mounting Bracket

  • Mark the desired location for the wall plate by holding a mounting bracket against the wall and tracing it with a pencil.
  • Cut out the shape of the mounting bracket with a drywall knife.
  • Set the mounting bracket in the hole you have just cut, and secure it into place by hand. Different mounting brackets secure into place in different ways; refer to your particular mounting bracket's instructions for details on how to secure it.

Running Cables

  • Find the location of the source cable; the location varies on the type of cable used. For example, a USB cable can run from one computer through a wall to a wall plate. A coaxial cable can run from a cable router through a wall to a wall plate.
  • Label the source cables to run to the wall plate to allow for easy identification when attaching them to the wall plate. Using a separate color for each type of cable can also help identify them.
  • Run a string through the opening in the mounting bracket through the wall and to the location of the source cable.
  • Attach the string to the end of the source cable. If you are running more than one type of cable at one time, tape the cables together firmly with electrical tape.
  • Pull the source cables through the wall with the string and out the opening in the mounting bracket.

Mounting the Cables to the Wall Plate

  • Purchase the appropriate connectors for each cable in the wall plate. Wall plates accommodate a number of cable types, some of which already have connectors and are "mountable" as-is. Strip any bare wires with wire strippers, and attach new connectors. Refer to your cable specifications to attach the correct mountable connectors for each cable type.
  • Mount the wires to the wall plate by passing the connectors through their matching holes in the wall plate and screwing them into place.
  • Mount the wired wall plate onto the wall bracket, and screw it into place.
