How to Define Audible Sound:

Playvision HD51 DTS AC3 5.1 Gear HD Audio Rush Converter

Energy, in the form of airwaves, creates audible sounds producing positive or negative effects on the psychological or physical well-being of humans. Whether the sound is pleasant or just plain "noise" is in the ear of the beholder

Definition

  • Sound creates air turbulence (wavelengths) whereas changing decibel (dB) levels alter wavelength pressure (adjust the volume). Audible sound involves wavelengths, amplitudes and frequencies passing through a medium (i.e. air, eardrum and inner ear), carried by the otic nerve to the brain where it's perceived as an amount of sound (dB)

Audible Sound Types

  • Continuous sound doesn't vary over time (rustling leaves) whereas varying sounds differ in maximum and minimum intensity (siren). Intermittent sounds alternate with silent spells (thumping base drum) and impulsive sounds describe loud sound intensity of relatively short duration (vuvuzela)

Audible Sound Levels

  • Audible sounds for humans extend from a whisper (10 to 30 dB) to the pain threshold of a gunshot (120 to130 dB), with speaking voices (50 to 60 dB) and chainsaws (90 to 100 dB) falling in between. Air pressure changes (wavelengths) --- measured in Hertz (Hz ) --- range from 20 cycles per second (20 Hz) to 20,000 kilohertz (kHz)

How to Clean Audio Equipment:

While the attitude of many people regarding their audio equipment is to plug it in and forget it, taking a little bit of care and adopting a regular routine to clean your equipment will keep it looking better, and, more importantly, keep it working better, longer. No special tools are needed for cleaning your gear, just the willingness to take a few minutes on a regular basis to protect your investment

  • Clean the contacts for your audio and video inputs. About twice a year, pull your gear out of the cabinet and disconnect all of your RCA-style plugs used for the video and audio connections between your pieces of gear (the RCA plug was developed by RCA in the 1940s -- some of you may know these as "patch cables.") Take a cotton swab, dip it into some rubbing alcohol, and gently rub it on the jacks and plugs. The swab should be damp, not dripping. Cleaning these connections will help impede corrosion, which can affect the quality of signal transfer
  • Vacuum dust and debris off of the equipment cases. Once every few months (more often in dirty environments), take the wand attachment of your vacuum and remove any dust or debris on the case. Pay particular attention to air or fan vents. Blocked vents can impair cooling of the electronic components, which can shorten the life span of the equipment. If dust collects in small crevices that you can't vacuum, try using compressed air (available in cans) to blow the debris out
  • Wipe off the face and controls with a damp rag. Once every few weeks, wipe off the display, buttons and control surfaces with a damp rag. Regular attention to this will prevent the buildup of grime and dirt, so your equipment will look its best. Check your equipment's manuals for their recommendations before using cleaning agents like Windex or other commercial cleaners
