How to Knit a Sweater:

HYX 816 Soft Pure Acrylic Baby Knitting Yarn

To knit a sweater is to feel a great sense of accomplishment. A sweater may seem overwhelming, but all you need are some instructions, the necessary materials and practice. Begin with a mini sweater for a bear. This will help you learn the basic procedures without wasting a lot of time and money. Once you master this miniature version, you can adjust the proportions to make different sizes

Begin the Back and Front of Your Sweater:

  • Cast on stitches(eg:134 stitches)
  • Begin the first row by purling one stitch
  • Create a slip stitch for the second stitch in row one. Place the yarn in front, insert the right needle into the next stitch from back to front and slip the stitch off. Repeat until the end of the row
  • Begin the second row by placing yarn in front. Insert your right needle into the stitch of the last row from back to front, then slip the stitch off
  • Continue the second row with a purl stitch while picking up both loops. Repeat for the rest of the row
  • Repeat two through five until you have 1 inch of fabric
  • Bind off three stitches for the armhole
  • Knit 26 stitches for the front as in rows one and two
  • Bind off three stitches and finish the back

Continue the Back and Front of Your Sweater:

  • Work on the front of the neck at the edge. For every other row bind off two stitches, then one stitch, and then the rest of the stitches for the shoulder
  • Shape the neck back in the same way
  • Continue knitting the back until you have an additional 3 inches of fabric
  • Bind off the 10 middle stitches
  • Create the neck back at the edge. On every other row bind off two stitches, then one stitch, then all remaining stitches to create the shoulder

Knit the Sleeves of Your Sweater:

  • Cast on 24 stitches in the round
  • Create the first row. Knit one stitch, purl one stitch, and repeat for the rest of the row
  • Increase by one stitch for the next row. Repeat the previous step
  • Repeat the previous row by increasing by one stitch every third row
  • Repeat the increase five times until you have 29 stitches
  • Continue until you reach a fabric length of 2 to 2 1/2 inches, then bind off loosely

Finish Your Sweater:

  • Sew the shoulder seams
  • Set in the sleeves
  • Pick up 39 stitches in the round for the neckband. Follow the pattern described above
  • Bind off loosely when the neckband is 1/2 inch high

How to Knit a Cable Scarf:

HYX 816 Soft Pure Acrylic Baby Knitting Yarn

Cable knitting, which resembles twisted ropes or cables, is a decorative form of knitting where a group of stitches regularly changes places with another group of stitches. It can be a simple two-section twist or more complicated with three or more strands. By twisting and turning cables, knitters can make diverse patterns, adding personality to an otherwise plain piece of knitting. It looks intimidating to the novice knitter, but isn't as complicated as it appears. Besides adding charm, it's also makes knitting more practical. Because of the added thickness, cable knitted clothing is warmer. This article assumes that the reader already is adept at using cable needles and has mastered the basic cable stitch

  • Decide on a width and then determine the number of stitches to cast. To keep your first project simple, knit a 12-inch wide scarf. As there are two stitches to every inch on size 17 needles, using large, bulky yarn, you would cast on 24 stitches
  • For rows one to four follow this pattern: Purl six stitches, knit six, purl six, knit six, purl six, knit six
  • For rows two, three and four, knit your knits and purl your purls
  • Beginning the fifth row, purl six stitches and then slip the next three stitches purl-wise, onto a cable needle. Let the cable needle with the stitches hang, dangling down in the front of your knitting. Knit the next stitch on your needle. Pull your yarn tightly and knit the next two stitches. Knit the first stitch on the cable needle. Again, pull the yarn tightly and knit the next two stitches. Put cable needle to one side and purl the next six stitches. Repeat this pattern for the remaining stitches to the end of the row
  • For the next three rows (six, seven and eight), knit the knits and purl the purls
  • On the ninth row, repeat the cable twist, (as in row 5) using your cable needle. Note that a cable stitch appears
  • Reverse the cable stitch. Cables can twist in the opposite direction. To reverse the cable stitches, follow the same steps. However, at the point where you slip the stitches, dangle your cable needle to the back of your work, instead of the front
  • Repeat this same pattern, as used in rows one through nine, until you reach your desired length. Cast off stitches and try on your new scarf
