How Does a Boom Box Work:

  • Sound information is stored digitally on a CD. When the CD is recorded, a sound wave is turned into digital information. The amplitude of the signal is written down on the CD as a tiny indentation 44,000 times per second. Combined together, all of these individual amplitudes make a picture of the sound wave
  • When you play the CD in your boom box, a laser bounces off those indentations. Based on the reflection, it creates a picture of the original sound wave, and creates a copy of it inside your boom box. The original sound wave is very low-powered at first, and not strong enough to come through the speakers of your boom box clearly.
  • The signal then goes through an amplifier. The amplifier intensifies the signal based on the setting of the volume knob. The higher the setting on the volume knob, the louder the sound
  • After that, the signal goes to the graphic equalizer. Not all boom boxes have equalizers, but most do nowadays. Each slider on the equalizer is selected to a filter that only lets certain frequencies pass. By moving the sliders up and down, you can control how loud each set of frequencies is. For example, if your boom box has a three-band graphic equalizer, one band controls the volume of the bass, one controls the mid-range, and one controls the treble
  • The last place the signal goes is to the speakers. Each speaker is a cone with a magnet at the center, sitting on top of an electromagnet. When there is a peak in the signal, the electromagnet turns on, pushing the magnet away and making the speaker push the air. When there is a trough in the signal, the electromagnet turns off, making the speaker pull at the air. These pushes and pulls take the electronic image of the sound wave from the amplifier and turn it into a real sound wave
