How to Fusion-Splice Fiber Optics:

CHOSEAL CHOSEAL 250Mb/s 1M 3ft Digital Optical Fiber Cable

  • Strip the outer jacket from the two ends of the fiber cables. This includes the Kevlar-strength fibers and the inner coating. The fusion-splicer instructions will tell you how far to strip back, and the fiber stripper will have detailed instructions on how to place and pull the fiber
  • Clean the bare fibers. Use an alcohol wipe or a lint-free cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol to clean the exposed fiber until it squeaks
  • Cleave the fiber ends. Every modern fusion splicer will have a recommended automated fiber cleaver, which eliminates the waste, time and frustration associated with manual cleaving and recleaving. Again, the cleaver will have a specific procedure for placing the cleaned fiber ends
  • Place heat-shrink tubing over one of the cleaved fiber ends, carefully sliding it over and back one of the lengths of fiber. Make sure the length is sufficient to cover the total length of bare cleaned fiber
  • Put the two fiber ends in the fusion splicer. Clamp the fibers in their respective holders so they can be safely and securely adjusted by the automated fusion process
  • Turn on the fusion splicer and verify that it's set to fuse the type of fibers you're working with. Select, as necessary, the proper program. Fusion splicers melt the fibers with an electrical current, and the amount of current needed to do the job properly will vary depending upon the fiber size and material
  • Press the start button. The fusion splicer will inspect the cleaved faces, align them, heat them and press them together. Some splicers even run an automated test procedure to verify the performance of the splice
  • Move the heatshrink tubing over the splice and use the heat gun to shrink it down over the spliced area. Some fusion splicers have an integral heater so you can complete this step using the splicer itself

How to Pull Fiber Optic Cable:

CHOSEAL CHOSEAL 250Mb/s 1M 3ft Digital Optical Fiber Cable

  • Clear a lane or route through which you would like to run your fiber optic cable. Dig a trench for your cable if you plan to run it underground or through a solid material
  • Create a conduit. You can run your fiber optic cable through tubing. Make sure the conduit is at least 40 percent wider in diameter than the cable you intend to run. Creating a conduit is not necessary, but it is recommended, particularly if you are trying to run your fiber optic cable through a solid material
  • Run your pulling fixture along the route you would like your fiber optic cable to run. Thread your pulling fixture through the conduit if you are using one
  • Tie the pulling fixture to the strength member on your fiber optic cable. The strength member is a fiber or tendril from the middle of your fiber optic cable that is designed for use in the pulling process
  • Carefully and gently draw your pulling fixture through the conduit or along the desired route. Be careful not to twist, bend or create tension on your fiber optic cable
  • Leave additional cable at both ends of the route. This may prove helpful in the event that you need to repair portions of your fiber optic cable in the fut
