How to Change Time on a Digital Clock:

  • Find out what the proper time is by using a wristwatch or another clock, such as the one on your TV or cable box
  • Look at your clock until you find the buttons marked "Time" or "Clock" and "Hour" and "Minute"
  • Hold down the button that says "Time"
  • Press the button that says "Hour" until you have reached the proper hour. Watch the clock face to see if it changes between "am" and "pm." Sometimes there is a separate button for this. Let the button up when you have reached the proper hour
  • Push the button that says "Minute" until you have reached the correct time. Double check to make sure the "am" or "pm" is correct

How to Make a Digital Clock:

  • Layout the parts on the prototype board the same way as they are shown on the schematic. Place the displays at the top of the board where they are more visible, ten hours on the left, then hours, minutes, and seconds. Through-hole packages are easier to solder, but some prototype boards have pads for surface mount packages also. Fig 1 shows the precision oscillator and the division down to 1 Hz
  • Using a soldering iron, attach each wire as shown on the schematic diagram. Print the schematic, and highlight each wire as it is soldered. The project won't work if you forget even one wire! Try to route the wires carefully, in case you have to debug the circuit. If the wires are clumped together it is hard to verify that it is all connected properly. Fig 2 shows the seconds and the minutes display
  • Before applying power to the circuit, a good test is to measure the impedance from each devices power pins and the ground pins to the power supply. If the circuit is wired correctly the impedance will be <1 ohm. If you have problems start at the 32.768kHz oscillator and make sure it is running, then follow the pulses through each counter to the appropriate display. Fig 3 shows the hours circuitry, another divide by 60 with an LED display
  • Finally, now you can set the time by advancing the counters when the pushbuttons are depressed. If the speed is too fast for your liking, just wire the pushbutton to a different output of the 8-bit counter. Two LEDs can be added between the hours and minutes display if you prefer, to complete the look of your clock. The blue LEDs are different

How to Set a Digital Clock:

  • Plug your digital clock into a standard AC wall outlet
  • Insert batteries into the battery compartment to avoid having to reset the clock if the power goes out or if the clock is accidentally unplugged. Make sure to observe the correct polarity when installing batteries in your digital clock
  • Examine the digital clock for a button or switch that allows you to access its time-setting mode. Look for buttons labeled "Clock," "Clock Set" or "Time." If your digital clock model does not have one of these buttons, look for ones labeled "Mode" or "Settings." Press, or press and hold, the appropriate time-setting button until the numbers on the digital display start blinking
  • Press the clock's "Hour" button repeatedly until the desired number value is shown. On some clocks, you might have to hold down the "Hour" button while adjusting the hours digits with "+" and "-" buttons
  • Press the "Minute" button repeatedly until the minutes place digits on the digital display reflect the desired value. Again, on some models, you might need to hold down the "Minute" button and use the "+" and "-" buttons to adjust the clock to the correct time
  • Press the "Clock Set" or "Mode" button on your digital clock to save your changes. Note that some digital clock models automatically save your changes after five seconds and return the clock to regular time-keeping mode
