Distribution Amplifier:


In electronics, a distribution amplifier or simply distribution amp, is a device that accepts a single input signal and provides this same signal to multiple isolated outputs.


These devices are important because they allow a signal to be distributed to multiple destinations without ground loops or signal degradation. They are used for a number of common engineering tasks, including multiple amplification, cable television, splitting monitor and front of house mixes, and "tapping" a signal prior to sending it through effects units to preserve a "dry" signal for later experimentation.


How to Build a Homemade Four-Output Distribution Amplifier?

Amplifiers with multiple outputs make it possible to route a single audio signal to multiple sources. A common application of the multiple output configuration is the headphone splitter amplifier. In environments where sound must be isolated, such as radio studios, the only way to provide audio is via a headphone mix. Multiple output amplifiers function like typical amplifiers, but the difference is that the output signal is split. If you're in a band, using a four-output amplifier is a convenient way to monitor your performances without using a loud PA system.


  • Purchase the required parts either individually or as part of a kit. The advantage of kits is that all of the parts are made-to-measure and compatible and include wiring schematic, which illustrates the layout and connection of the circuit.
  • Assemble the circuit board. The blank turret board forms the base of the circuit board. Typical board-mounted components include capacitors, resistors, diodes, fuses, op-amp chip and voltage regulators. Slot these into the turrets on the board. Push them fully in so that the connector pins poke through to the base of the board. Once fully populated, place the board face-down.
  • Solder the connector pins to the metal traces on the board base. Each turret is surrounded by a metal trace. This strip connects each board-mount part. Dip the soldering iron tip into the solder. Press the tip of the soldering iron simultaneously over the connector legs and base to fuse them.
  • Prepare the chassis enclosure. If the chassis is not pre-drilled, make holes for the inputs, outputs and power supply socket. Use a standard electric drill and ¼-inch standard drill bit to cut five holes for the jacks: One on the right-hand side and four on the left. Use a dremel to cut a square hole on the back of the chassis enclosure in which to mount the IEC power supply socket.
  • Mount the jacks on the chassis. Slot each ¼ inch jack into a hole on the chassis.
  • Cut five pieces of power wire. Strip the ends of each piece to expose the metal. Solder a piece of power to each potentiometer output terminal. Solder the input jack wire to the op-amp chip on the circuit board. Solder the four output jack wires to the point on the circuit board directly after the final resistor.
  • Wire the IEC power supply or battery snap. Cut a piece of power wire and a piece of ground wire. Strip each piece of wire at both ends to expose the metal. Solder both wires to the IEC power supply, power wire to the positive terminal, ground wire to the negative. Connect the wires to the positive and negative eyelets on the board respectively.
  • Mount the completed circuit board into the base of the chassis enclosure. Screw it in.
  • Screw down the chassis lid with a Phillips screwdriver.
