How to Glue on False Nails

False nails make it possible for anyone to have long nails. You can buy these nail kits at most pharmacies for under $10, half the price of a salon manicure. These kits include pre-designed nails, glue and other tools such as manicure stick and nail file. If you cannot find a suitable kit, purchase false nails at wholesale rates from certain nail salons and commercial retailers. Stores that specialize in nails will have a wider range of lengths and widths.

  • Trim your nails short. There should be about 1/4"-1/8" of white tip showing. Avoid trimming your nails too close to the bed as this could result in injury. You may leave natural nails long if using nails with solid patterns. Push back cuticles and trim gently.
  • Remove existing nail polish with liquid remover and then wash hands. Smooth the edges of your nail with a nail file. Buff the edge and surface of your nail.
  • Match false nails to your fingers. Clear a section of the table to lay out the selected nails. Test each nail by placing it over your real nail and aligning the nail bed and sides. Trim false nail with clippers and file until it fits your fingers.
  • Place 2-3 drops of glue on the false nail. Start with the pinkie finger of your dominant hand. Apply the false nail from cuticle to tip, pressing and holding in place as you work. Wipe away any overflowing glue with manicure stick while glue is still wet. Hold in place for 15-30 seconds.
  • Continue applying nails to dominant hand. Begin applying nails to other hand, starting with the pinkie and work toward the thumb.
  • Trim nails to desired shape. Wash hands and paint or design as desired.

How to Make False Nails

False nails look pretty if you create them to appear like real nails. False nails are particularly helpful in adding style and grace for women who are unable to grow longer nails. If you take proper care of fake nails, they can provide even more strength and durability than real nails. Real nails, on the other hand, start to weaken once they grow beyond 3/16 inch of the tips of the fingers. Making false nails is very simple if you have the materials available.

  • Purchase any one of the first three materials listed in the "Things You'll Need" section. You can make false nails with Swedish plastic, hobby plastic or an acrylic sheet. Look for these materials at any craft store.
  • Start cutting small strips of the sheet or plastic. These strips should resemble the curve of fingernails. You might not be able to get the perfect shape initially, so try a few times until you get the material into a perfect fit for your nails.
  • Use contact cement, rubber cement or super glue as a nail adhesive. Cement holds nails pretty well and is easy to remove afterward. Super glue adheres very quickly, but is not very easy to remove.
  • Blow-dry the acrylic or plastic strips on the nails. The heat from the dryer will relax the plastic and help it bend easily on the nail. Make sure you don't overheat the plastic, because it will not be able to retain its original shape.
  • When the nail dries, apply two layers of nail color. After applying one layer, let it dry completely before applying the second coat.
