How to Repair an iPod Wheel?

  • The iPod click wheel provides an easy method for navigating through the menus of the MP3 player. When the iPod's hard drive starts to behave erratically, there is a known issue that causes the click wheel to stop functioning. Having the click wheel repaired by a service center can be costly, although repairing the click wheel yourself requires opening the iPod. This can be done without needing a replacement for the click wheel and doesn't require any knowledge of electronics

Instructions:

  • Put the clean cloth down on a work surface. Turn on the iPod and put it down face up on the clean cloth. Leave the iPod alone until the battery has completely drained of power
  • Insert the flat utility knife's blade into the tiny crack of the seam between the white plastic front and the metal back of the iPod
  • Angle the blade down towards the metal back and push it in between the white plastic front and the metal back
  • Lever the blade of the flat utility knife upward to pry the white plastic top off of the metal back. Put the white plastic top aside
  • Take the tweezers. Carefully use the tweezers to pull off the the hard drive connector at the bottom corner of the motherboard on the inside of the metal back. Use the tweezers to reattach the hard drive connector to the motherboard after a minute has passed
  • Reassemble the iPod by pressing the white plastic front to the metal back. Charge the iPod's battery. Turn the iPod on and return to using the click wheel to navigate through the menus
