How to Upgrade a Laptop Optical Drive:

Upgrading your optical drive could allow access to expanded storage technologies. Laptop architecture varies from model to model, but most manufacturers are creating laptops that allow easy changing or upgrading of the optical drives. However, if an internal upgrade is not what you were considering, there are some external methods you could try as well. To take advantage of newer optical technology, you may find yourself in need of a new drive entirely.

  • Instructions
  • Determine whether you want an internal upgrade or an external optical drive. External optical drives typically connect via USB, but diminish some of the portability of your laptop. External optical drives are typically plug-and-play, which means all you need to do is plug them into the USB and most computers will be able to use it immediately.
  • Unplug the computer and remove the battery to upgrade the internal drive. Flip over the laptop so you are staring at the bottom. Most computers will mark the screw which secures the optical drive with some sort of relevant pictogram. If you cannot locate the screw, it may be hidden under one of the covers on the bottom of the laptop. Remove the memory cover or wireless card cover to try and locate the screw. You should also be able to see the small metal tab that is coming off the back of the optical drive. Loosen the screw and then push on the tab to pop out the drive.
  • Slide the new drive into the optical slot slowly. Do not let the optical drive drop or slam into the slot as it may damage the port on the motherboard. Push evenly on the front of the optical drive until you feel it slide into the port and the drive's plastic face becomes flush with the laptop casing. Reinsert the optical drive's screw and replace any covers you may have removed. Internal optical drives are also plug in play, so turn on the computer and test to see if it is working correctly.

How to Use an External Drive to Play CDs & DVDs:

If you don't want to pay to have an optical disc drive installed inside your computer (or don't have the knowledge to do so yourself), you can just buy an external drive. External drives operate using "plug and play" technology, which means that you literally just plug them into your computer and you're ready to go. They're not portable, but they're still a viable alternative to spending the money to get an internal unit put into your machine.

  • Instructions
  • Use the USB data transfer cable that came with your external optical disc drive to connect the drive to your computer. Just plug an end of the cable into your computer, and the other end into your external drive.
  • Plug your external optical disc drive's power cable into the wall.
  • Press "Eject" on the front of your external optical disc drive and place your CD or DVD in the tray. Close the tray by either pushing it closed or by pressing "Eject" again.
  • Click "Start."
  • Click "Computer." In this folder is an icon for your external optical disc drive. Double-clicking on the icon will cause your disc to automatically play if it's a video disc, audio disc or software installation disc. If your CD or DVD is just storing data, right-click on the drive and click "Explore" to access it.
