Network Camera Power Supply:

Network cameras are a convenient way to set up a cheap, scalable surveillance system. The biggest consideration during installation is how to supply them with power. There are various options with the most common being power over Ethernet (POE)

Poe Network CameraPoe Splitter Standard Power Cabling

  • Many older style network cameras use conventional power cabling, similar to that used in household appliances and running at the same voltage. This type of camera requires a separate cable run along with the Ethernet cable that supplies communications to the camera. The power cable must then be terminated into a power supply which uses a standard plug to supply power to it. This is the least efficient way to supply power to a network camera

Power Over Ethernet Network Cameras

  • POE cameras use a standard Cat5, Cat5E or Cat6 Ethernet cable to supply power and communications to them. Standard network devices only use four of the eight available wires on the cable and these spare four are used to provide power to the device. Most network cameras available today will be POE-capable and not require an additional power source. This cuts down on cabling requirements

Power Over Ethernet Switches

  • The additional requirement for POE cameras is the availability of a power over Ethernet switch. A standard hub, switch or router will not supply a POE device with power. A switch must have POE capability and be configured to supply power to devices connected to its ports. These switches are widely available, inexpensive and require very little configuration

How to Repair the Power Supply to a Surveillance Camera:

Lieder Security 16-Port Rack mountable Professional CCTV Camera DC12V Power Supply INS-SR216

Surveillance cameras can be powered by electricity through an AC outlet, or by batteries that are placed inside the camera. To repair a power supply on a surveillance camera that is not working, the battery contacts may be corroded; if the camera operates via electricity, the power plug on the surveillance camera will need to be evaluated. A few supplies from around the home will be needed, supplemented by parts from an electronics shop. Common household tools will also be needed

  • Open the battery compartment lid on the back or bottom of the wireless, battery-powered surveillance camera -- if there is a screw attached to the lid, remove the screw first with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Remove the battery from inside the battery compartment. Dispose of the battery properly. Do not just toss them in the trash -- chemicals can leak out and cause damage to the environment
  • Pull the battery clip with the corroded contacts ed out from the compartment. Snip off the two wires attached to the battery clip with wire cutters. Dispose of the battery clip in the trash
  • Moisten a paper towel in distilled alcohol. Wipe out the inside of the battery compartment with the paper towel. Dip a cotton swab in distilled alcohol. Rub the inside edges of the compartment with the swab. Dispose of the swab and paper towel in the trash
  • Scrape the already-stripped ends of the two wires attached to the replacement battery clip -- use the blade of a utility knife to do this. From inside the battery compartment, strip one-quarter of an inch from each of the two wires with wire strippers
  • Wrap the exposed end of the replacement battery clip's black wire around the exposed end of the black wire inside the battery compartment. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around the two wires. Wrap the exposed end of the replacement battery clip's red wire around the exposed end of the red wire inside the battery compartment. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around the two wires
  • Place the replacement battery clip into the compartment and close the lid. Be sure to reattach the screw if there is one

AC Powered Surveillance Camera

  • Unplug the surveillance camera's power cord from the wall outlet if it is still plugged in. Hold the plug with the two prongs facing you. Remove the screw on the front of the plug with a Phillips screwdriver
  • Pull the back section of the plug off the front. Loosen the two screws now visible with the Phillips screwdriver. Unwind the wires from around each screw. Run the wires through the hole in the back section of the plug. Dispose of all of the pieces of the plug in the trash
  • Remove the screw on the front of the replacement plug with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the back section of the plug off
  • Run the two wires attached to the cord through the hole in the center of the back section
  • Loosen the two screws on the back of the front section of the plug with the Phillips screwdriver. Wind a wire each around the two screws. Tighten the screws
  • Place the back section of the plug back on the front section. Screw the screw back in the front section with the Phillips screwdriver
