How to Prevent Razor Rash After Shaving:

  • There are ways that you can prevent razor burn from occurring that you should practice every time you shave
  • No matter what area you are preparing to shave, clean it up first with a exfoliate or a loofah sponge whichever you prefer. doing this allows any dead skin to be removed as well as prepares the skin by bringing out any ingrown hairs
  • The best time to shave is towards the end of your shower or bath. Saving shaving for the last thing to do in your shower or bath allows the skin to soften up and that is the best time to shave
  • Make sure that you use new, clean razors to avoid razor burn. Using old ones will irritate your skin. If you use an electric shaver then make sure that you regularly clean it up
  • Lather up with shaving cream let it sit for a minute or two to soften up your skin. Make sure that it is a good quality shaving cream and if you have very sensitive skin then it best to use a shaving cream for sensitive skin. Using regular soap may cause drying of the skin and actually increase your chances of obtaining razor burn
  • Next start shaving with the grain of the hair growth in light delicate strokes. Do not dig the razor in, hold it gently. Make sure you shave the way of your hair growth, going against it will lead to skin irritation like ingrown hairs. Make sure that you rinse the razor after each stroke to insure a clean smooth shave
  • Avoid shaving the same area over and over, this will lead to razor burn. Rinse the area well after you are done and pat dry
  • Next you want to apply a moisturizing lotion. This helps soothe any possible irritated skin
  • If you still have razor burn after taking these steps then you want to apply a aloe vera-based cortisone cream, other tree oil sprays or lotions, aftershave or lotion to sooth your skin. They sell special hydrating creams to help prevent and treat razor burn as well
  • Clean your skin on a daily basis with an exfoliate containing salicylic acid. This helps get rid of any dead skin making it easier to get a close shave
  • Do not place any alcohol based products on the affected area as this will worsen your razor burn
  • If after trying the above techniques and you still develop razor burn then perhaps you should try other hair removal options. There are other options such as ...
  • If you use a disposable razor then perhaps you should opt for an electric razor that has a self releasing gel for shaving. Although razors and refills can be quit pricey not using new clean razors can cause razor burn. This is one area that you do not want to be cheap on. Razor burn is very uncomfortable and annoying, so you want to prevent it from reacquiring or happening in the first place
  • If you run out of your shaving cream or gel then use conditioner. Hair conditioner is a great aid in shaving. I have tried using it and it leaves my legs feeling very soft
  • Make sure that you take your time and do not rush when you are shaving, your skin will thank you later. If you rush then you are likely to not shave correctly and are likely to get irritated skin. If you shave correctly then you are likely to not experience razor burn. So take your time and if you have any questions on proper shaving techniques then ask your friends and family members for their advice
  • If you cut yourself during shaving, dab a little lip balm like Chapstick on the cut. This will help it stop bleeding
