How to Use HDMI Cables With a PS3 on a Sony Bravia HDTV:

Owners of Sony Bravia flat-screen TVs can connect their PlayStation 3 consoles to create television displays using high-definition HDMI cables. Using HDMI to connect these devices offers two advantages over the standard AV cable output: It produces a higher resolution and also combines both audio and video channels into a single plug, which makes installation quicker and simpler

Instructions

Connecting the HDMI Cables

  • Turn off both the console and television set before moving them
  • Plug one end of the HDMI cable into one of the HDMI ports on either the back of the set or on one of the side panels
  • Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the rear panel of the PS3 console. The HDMI port is in the center of the panel and is labeled

Setting HDMI Output Mode on the PS3

  • Turn on the PS3 by pressing the power button or by pressing the "PS" button on the PS3 controller.
  • Select your user account and press the "X" button on the controller
  • Select the "Settings" icon on the PS3 home screen and then select "Display Settings" in the menu. Press the "X" button to enter the "Display Settings" screen
  • Select "Video Output Settings" and press the "X" button
  • Select "HDMI" and press the "X" button
  • Press the "X" button again to confirm the video output mode switch. A list of supported screen resolutions will appear. Supported resolutions will automatically be selected. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button
  • A screen with a review of your new settings will appear. Press the "X" button to confirm the changes and save the new video output settings

How to Connect a PS3 to an HDTV:

The PS3 looks best when connected to an HDTV using either of its HD connections. The PS3 supports both HDMI and component video connection. While either connection will look good on most HDTVs, HDMI produces a higher quality video connection and should be the preferred choice if the option is available. (HDMI is available on most HDTVs.) The PS3 does not include an HDMI or component cable

Instructions

HDMI connection

  • Turn off the PS3. Disconnect any previous video connection (such as the standard AV connection). Turn off the TV
  • Connect one end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI" slot on the back of the PS3. Connect the opposite end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI" slot on your television (usually on the side or in the back)
  • Turn on the TV. Set the TV to its "HDMI" video mode. Turn on the PS3. After a few seconds, you will see the PS3 logo appear, indicating the connection was successful. When asked if you'd like to switch to HDMI, use the PS3 controller to select "Yes." When asked if you want to switch to the most optimal setting for your TV, select "Yes." When asked to accept the settings, select Yes

Component connection

  • Turn off the PS3. Disconnect any previous video connection (such as the standard AV connection). Turn off the TV
  • Connect the square end of the PS3 component cable into the "AVI Multi Out" port on the back of the PS3. The component cable separates the video cables from the audio cables. The video cables are green, blue and red. The audio cables are white and red. Insert the green, blue and red video cables into the "green," "blue" and "red" component inputs on the HDTV. Insert the white and red audio cables into the "white" and "red" AV inputs on the HDTV
  • Turn on the TV. Set the TV to its "Component" video mode. Turn on the PS3. After a few seconds, you will see the PS3 logo appear, indicating the connection was successful
