How to Build a Portable Small Voice Amplifier
- Drill one 1/4-inch hole in the right side of the speaker chassis. This is where the jack will be mounted.
- Use a router to make a 2-inch hole on the front of the amplifier chassis.
- Screw the speaker into the front of the chassis so the opening of the cone sits flush against the 2-inch hole.
- Fit the board-mount components into the blank circuit board. Push each component into the correct turret. Typically, blank circuit boards have predrilled turrets so that only the correct component can fit into the turret. Push each component down hard enough to drive the connector pins through to the base. The potentiometers will stand taller than the other components. The tops of the potentiometers will poke through the chassis when the board is mounted.
- Flip the board over and gently press each connector pin flat against the brass conductor strip on the base of the board.
- The conductor strips connect the circuit.
- Solder each connector pin to the brass conductor strip.
- Screw the circuit board to the base of the chassis using the standard circuit board screws. Measure the distance between the potentiometer tops and the edges of the chassis. Note down the measurements.
- Mount the XLR jack in the hole. Fasten the supplied washer to the outside of the chassis to hold it in place. The XLR jack is where you connect the microphone.
- Cut two pieces of power wire, each 1 inch long. Put the chassis top and base side-by-side so you can wire the board to the speaker.
- Solder one piece of power wire to the output terminal on the inside of the XLR jack.
- Solder a power wire to the circuit board eyelet directly to the right of the output transformer. Solder the other end to the input terminal on the back of the speaker.
- Solder the red wire connected to the 9-volt battery snap to the positive eyelet on the circuit board. Solder the black wire to the negative eyelet next to it.
- Fit a 9-volt battery to the snap.
- Plot a hole on the top of the chassis, in line with where the potentiometers will protrude. Use a 1/8-inch drill bit to bore a hole for each potentiometer top.
- Line up the top of the chassis to the potentiometers poke through the holes. Screw the base of the chassis to the top of the chassis. Fit the dials to the tops of the potentiometers.
